2025 CHAU-SHI Series GIANT Open
Press Conference
2025/9/9
The eighth stop of the CHAU-SHI Series – GIANT Open, with a total prize fund of NT$3,000,000, will be held from September 10 to 13 at Donghua Elite Golf Club, featuring four rounds of 72 holes. A total of 117 players from five countries, including 113 professional golfers and four amateurs, will compete for the NT$500,000 winner’s prize. This marks the second consecutive year that GIANT Heavy Machinery Engineering Co., Ltd. has served as the title sponsor of this stop on the Taiwan PGA Tour. Last year’s Taiwan champion Huang Chi will aim to defend his title.
This tournament is fully titled and sponsored by Wong Chau-shi, Honorary Chairman of the Mercuries Group. The event is hosted by GIANT Heavy Machinery Engineering Co., Ltd., organized by The PGA of Taiwan (TPGA), and co-organized by Donghua Elite Golf Club.
Today (September 9), the pro-am tournament and pre-tournament press conference were held, featuring 18 holes of golf. Thirty-two professional players paired up with over 100 amateur guests in a friendly competition using the new scramble format. The team led by Li Jui-shen and three invited guests scored an impressive 16-under-par 56, winning the pro-am championship. Each guest received a premium Mizuno lightweight golf bag.
During today’s press conference, Chang Lin-guei, Chairman of GIANT Heavy Machinery Engineering Co., Ltd., stated that GIANT began sponsoring the TPGA Tour last year and discovered that organizing a tournament is similar to running a business, requiring close coordination and teamwork. He also noted that while GIANT continues to grow as a leading domestic company, it is also expanding into international markets, much like TPGA players competing abroad. He expressed his hope that GIANT and the players can work together to venture overseas and achieve greater success.
This tournament is one of ten events in this year’s CHAU-SHI Series and is the third-to-last stop of the season. As the season nears its conclusion, the battle for championships and ranking points becomes critical, influencing both the CHAU-SHI Series Order of Merit and the additional bonuses awarded to the top three players in the overall TPGA Tour money rankings. Competitors are expected to give their all in pursuit of the best possible results.
The CHAU-SHI Series has established a special Order of Merit Champion Bonus. The player who wins the Order of Merit title will receive an additional NT$250,000 prize, provided by Lin Kuo-erh, Chairman of HONLIN CONSTRUCTION CO., LTD. The winner will also earn an automatic exemption into the 2026 Mercuries Taiwan Masters.
Currently, Wang Wei-hsuan leads the CHAU-SHI Series money list with NT$1.771 million, followed by Chang Wei-lun with NT$1.314 million, Hung Chien-yao with NT$958,000, and Huang Yi-tseng in fourth with NT$654,000.
Founded in 2013, GIANT Heavy Machinery Engineering Co., Ltd., under the leadership of Chairman Chang Lin-guei, has grown into a professional team of approximately 160 employees with an average age of under 35, demonstrating the company’s youth, professionalism, and energy.
The company specializes in transporting and hoisting large-scale equipment, providing customized solutions that balance safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness for challenging projects involving oversized, overweight, or complex loads. Giant’s expertise can be seen in Taiwan’s major science parks and industrial sectors, including petrochemicals, technology, power generation, wind energy, and offshore wind power, as the company continues to contribute to Taiwan’s industrial development and green energy transformation.
In recent years, GIANT has also been dedicated to corporate social responsibility, supporting environmental and social initiatives such as coastal cleanups, children’s care and outreach programs, and sponsorship of elementary school badminton teams, actively contributing to ecological preservation and community welfare.
The CHAU-SHI Series was founded by Wong Chau-shi, one of the founders of the Mercuries Group and its Honorary Chairman. In 2021, due to the pandemic’s impact on the TPGA Tour, which reduced the number of events and overall prize funds, Wong personally stepped in as the overall title sponsor, funding six events with NT$2 million each, totaling NT$12 million, to help rebuild the tour’s foundation. Since then, the CHAU-SHI Series has been held for five consecutive years under the same model, with Wong personally sponsoring the entire series. Each event now carries a prize purse of NT$1.5 million.
This year, the number of tournaments increased from eight to ten, with Wong sponsoring a total of NT$15 million, bringing the TPGA Tour’s total number of events to 20 tournaments for the season.
This event features 97 Taiwanese players, including three amateurs, along with 20 international players from Australia, Japan, Malaysia, and Thailand. The field includes many of Taiwan’s top professionals, with most of the top 60 players from last year’s TPGA Tour money rankings participating. Among the current season’s top ten on the money list, five are competing: Shen Wei-cheng (1st), Hung Chien-yao (4th), Huang Yi-tseng (6th), Hsieh Ting-wei (7th), and Lu Sun-i (10th).
Last year, Huang Chi claimed victory at this event after defeating Shen Wei-cheng in a playoff and will be aiming to defend his title this year. Shen Wei-cheng, who captured the SANYA TPGA Championship earlier this season, is also seeking his second win, while Huang Yi-tseng is pursuing another title after winning the CHAU-SHI Series - Chung Hua Ta Chia Charity Invitational earlier this year.
After two rounds, the top 50 players with the lowest total scores will advance to the final two rounds. The winner will take home NT$500,000, while the runner-up will receive NT$250,000.
Donghua Elite Golf Club will play at a total yardage of 7,176 yards for this week’s event. The first two rounds will feature split tee times in the morning and afternoon, with simultaneous starts on the 1st and 10th tees. The first group in the morning will tee off at 6:30 AM, and the first group in the afternoon will start at 11:00 AM.
